Work in Progress

This page will hold samples of things that I’ve worked on as a graphic designer for University Outreach and Engagement at MSU and other personal work. I’ll be updating it whenever inspiration hits.

Design + Me

I love white space and I love color. I fell into graphic design while doing my specialization in Digital Media Art and Technology during my master’s at Michigan State University.

I believe there are two sides to design: the kind you do at work and the kind you do to nurture your soul. There’s design for others and then there’s creativity for self.

For work, I start everything with two basic questions: What does the user want? and What do we need the user need to know? Then I pull together the various design and information elements to find a common ground between those two questions. I incorporate basic principles of usability and accessibility into whatever I’m working on, be it for print or web. That’s the technical part of my work, where creativity has to be reasoned and harnessed.

For myself, the only question I ask when I feel the need to be creative is: What do I feel like doing today? Some days it’s watercolor, other days it’s Photoshop, or food, or ink, or maybe a little bit of this and a little bit of that. I’m fascinated with different media and always look forward to discovering what the end result is going to be

Africa Ad

This ad’s purpose was to promote MSU’s outreach and engagement efforts in Africa at the 2008 U.S.-Africa Sister Cities Conference. The main slogan “MSU Connects With Africa” is derived from a previous series of “MSU Connects With You” ads.
